Tues 26th Oct 2010    Missing person appeal! A message from Tonto.    Last Sunday (24th Oct) the reason we lost Flat Mate was that his chain came off (it took longer to sort out than he'd expected) + when he arrived at the next junction there was no one there to tell him where to go. He didn't have a map + (as you know) there were no markings. Please can you ask Scout Bashers who do "live rides" to do a head count + check that no one is missing?

(Also....Thanks to Tonto for looking up the postcodes for the upcoming rides so that the lazy among us can just punch the numbers into our satnavs and cruise to the start.....Way to go Tonto!! Ed)

Sun 19th Sept 2010    Forest of Dean Weekend    Many thanks to Ken the Rave, Spoons and Juicy for organising some great trails for the thirty or so riders who turned up for the rides in the Forest of Dean this weekend. The weather on Saturday was just perfect for riding....clear, dry and not too warm. We had some rain overnight and Sunday was a little damp, but the forest rails were still largely dry and the riding was excellent. One of the local riders, Dave, took a nasty tumble on Saturday and hurt his neck, but luckily, Mayhem and Bothways were on hand to assess the situation and then Bothways and Diddy accompanied him back to Redbrook so he could pick up a lift home. We hope that he is making a speedy recovery and will be out riding again soon.
It would be good to put together a few pictures for a gallery ...so...an appeal from Manky.....If you have any pics of the weekend, could you email them to me (three or four of the best ones would be ideal) at webmaster@tvpb.org.uk and I'll post them on the website.
Cheers All and hope to see you again soon Bobbiballs ride 25th Jul 2010.gif

They are up to 1100 riders in the South west so far, but hoping to have more than 2500 so any help we could give would be greatly appreciated. It looks as if the entry fee will be in aid of the prostate cancer charity. Click on the link for the Tour of Britain website, or sign up for the rides .

Thursday 22 July - ride is from The Farmhouse Tavern, Newton Road, Torquay (opposite Lidl), Scout Basher Tripey - this is a re-run of last Thursday's ride when only 3 bashers turned up - the weather was a trifle inclement. Hopefully it will be better this week.

Wed 14th Jul 2010    Hi from Knobblies re: Charity Ride on 19th Sept
We are helping promote and organise a mountain bike challenge in aid of the charity "Seeway Trust" - www.swtz.org . The ride will be primarily off-road in the East Devon area and will be 30 or 50 miles. It is going to be guided, with refreshment stops. We would love you to consider entering. It's just £5 for Adults (over 16 and 17 yrs only - £3). This is a nominal fee so that we can get a commitment and a good idea of numbers to help with the logistics of guiding a sizeable group. Money for the charity will be raised by sponsorship - we hope a min of £20 per person can be raised.(forms in shop along with registration).
Please help us by entering if you are up to it (practice rides will be going if there is a demand). Also we need some volunteer help for flapjacks or other trail side food, and perhaps manning a refreshment post. If you can't ride then we would welcome some sponsorship!!

best regards

Chris and the Knobblies team

Green Badgers having a wonderful time! A message from Buzzer and Helen

Left England on Sunday the 4th July and headed to Bourg St Maurice in the French Alps... What a beautiful place and we have been so lucky with the weather so far.
We met a group of friends here (you will know who you are) Who have been mountain biking. I managed to join them on Friday and it was probably the best down-hilling i have ever done (well done Tim).
Today they all went home or at least i think they may have as they had a last minute flight cancellation. I hope they have sorted it without too much hassle. Helen and I went off to a lovely pool for a swim at les arc 1800. We could hear thunder all around us but the weather held out, bit cloudy but still warm.
We are trying to plan to catch a stage of the Tour de France in one of the mountain stages in the next couple of days because it passes very close to Bourg.
We will be walking and chilling for a while now until we are joined by Tim, Jo, Pete and Deb for some more full-on Mountain biking
Here are some pictures for you to look at...(and make you jealous..Just check out that campervan!!.....Ed!)

Sat 3rd Jul 2010    C.O. hurt in kerbstone ambush.    Pottsie has hurt his knee whilst on manoeuvres on the continent. Two members of the expeditionary force (Pottsie and Bedpig) were about to cross a roundabout but as they entered no-mans-land they encountered an enemy kerbstone, resulting in the CO breaking his kneecap. Bedpig mercifully survived the attack and was well enough to take charge of the expedition vehicle, driving Pottsie back to Blighty for treatment. He is now recuperating at home.

Mon 26th Apr 2010    Take care of Bobbiball    We have learned that Bobbiball's 60th birthday is actually on the 17th of May....two days after his birthday party. It will be necessary for all those attending to ensure that he survives the party so that he is able to celebrate his birthday. This will mean that he should eat a sensible balanced diet, retire early, avoid violent physical exercise such as dancing, and certainly should not partake of any alcoholic beverage. Thankyou Da Boyz on Dartmoor
Wed 21st Apr 2010    Tomorrow's ride from the Silent Whistle at Ashburton.    As well as the road ride, Aga Khan is going to lead an off-road ride which will be suitable for all....Some excitement (jumps and drop-offs) for the head bangers, but work arounds for the more cautious!! Litter the tree hitter's no quitter....

Gary Litter (A.K.A. "The Russian") had a bit of a spill in the Forest of Dean last week and broke his collarbone. Luckily, Debacle was on hand to provide sympathy..... Here's an X-ray of the bone.....Ouch!
Gary's still on some strong drugs (nothing to do with the collarbone I suspect!!!) and has provided the following quote to go with the picture...."Knitting's a 2 handed sport - A history of one handed, right handed past times by Knott Rushanmuch"

Cape Argus Cycle ride - A message from Wun

Dear all, Apparently Lance Armstrong is entering this year’s Race which takes place on the 14th March. His start time is 6.30 am and he is estimated to take two and a half hours, so he should finish at 9.00am.
My start time is 8.02 so I reckon that, at best, I have an hour to catch him, which I think is a tad unfair.
My objectives are to finish and not to get off the bike on the hills and to raise as much money as I can for the local charity that I support.
You can view the charity on www.d4dsa.co.za and they do a fantastic job of supporting a variety of local charities and foster homes.
Last year I raised R38,000 and this year I will start by donating £1000 (R12,000).
Whatever I manage to raise will be much appreciated and I thank you in anticipation of any support that you can offer.

Regards,
Malcolm

Sat 20th Feb 2010    An Invitation from Alistair "MadAl" Cope    I hope you are all well and surviving the winter wet and cold! Just thought TVPB members might like to check out a charity challenge that I am running for Headway Devon. Details are here: http://www.veloventures.co.uk/ Some single track vid on youtube taken last October http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cne74cMHu1M http://www.headwaydevon.org.uk/-p-89.htm It’s a fantastic x/c MTB experience and a really good Devon charity to raise money for. Let me know if you have any questions. Cheers Alistair (alistair.cope@veloventures.co.uk)
Friday 19th Feb 2010    A Message from Wang,
Thank you to all those who helped/supported Agnes and myself in our Appeal against the refusal to grant her an entry visa to the UK. We heard the other day that my Appeal had persuaded the High Commission in Ghana that they had made a mistake and they revoked their October decision.
As long as the passport and Appeal papers reach us before the end of March, Agnes will be sat right next to me on my flight home on 12th April!!
An open invitation: as I will have officially retired from teaching and somehow reached the grand old age of 55 both on the 20th April, I invite those with both time and money to go to the evening Newton Abbot horse racing meet, followed by the Tucker's Maltings beer festival on Friday 23rd April.Obviously you will have to fund your own vices, but there should be a good crowd of my various 'friends' and you could actually MAKE some money!!
So, I sincerely thank all those who either wished us luck or signed the(misspelt) petition.
On On!!
I have my VTT here and doing plenty of good rides...but the heat can be a problem...unlike in the UK!!??
Wang
(And apologies from Manky . This message was sent to us last week and I have only just got around to publishing it! Sorry)

See edition 11 on the Birdseye page. (There are lots of photos in this one so it's over 3 megabytes and may take a little while to download....please be patient!)

CTC Rides

Pottsie wondered whether any bashers would be interested in taking part in a couple of the high profile CTC rides this year. The first is the "Devon Dirt" on Sunday 25th April (starts at 9:30am from Newton Abbot). This is a physically demanding off-road ride, but we understand not highly technical.
Secondly, The "Devon Delight" on Sunday 4th July (starts at 9:00am from Newton Abbot). This is a 100 kilometre road ride.
If interested, contact Graham Brodie. 01626 367977 or 07980 241245. or email brodie@bikerider.com. More details can be found at the CTC Devon website, or click http://www.devondirt.co.uk/ to visit the Devon Dirt Website. The info page for the Devon Delight can be found at http://www.ctcdevon.co.uk/delight_info.htm

Bobbiball's weekend photos.

We now have a few photos from Bobbiball's weekend. Thanks to Gary Litter (AKA "The Russian") for a photo (among others) of the beatiful snow covered landscape on the previous weekend when the ride was scouted......Unfortunately, the beautiful snow covered landscape changed into a quagmire before the Sunday ride, and at times, Bashers were seen to be carrying their bikes through Knee-deep mud. We haven't received any reports of any missing bashers yet, so we hope everyone got home safely! See some pics on the photos page.
Message from Stonewall re February gravity Extravaganza

Hi everyone We promised to get something going for end of Feb.
Tim and Jo and I have come up with "Gravity Extravaganza." It will be at a place called Tryscomb down (spelling not necessary), near the Quantocks, date 28th of February. We all we be supplying our own uplift service. We want to kick off about 9.30 am. So be there for 9.00am. If you are interested please email trevor.jackson@ir.inchcape.co.uk. Uplift service will be some of our own vans and Buzzers camper, so only cost will be fuel for them. Buzz (bless him) will probably not be fit to ride so he will drive all day (like Chris did for us last time) so we will need to be saying a big thanks to him. Tim says the trails are for everybody with no big obstacles to overcome. So ordinary XC steeds will cope ok. More details to follow when we have a better idea of numbers.
Tuesday 9th Feb 2010    Bobbiball's Exmoor Weekend    A big thankyou to all those who helped make last weekend a great success. Many of you contributed in various ways, but we must recognise Bobbiball....obviously, for naming the weekend,......V2, Hay-Minor, Mayhem and Snakebite, for setting the ride on Saturday, ......Gary Litter (AKA "The Russian") for leading the Sunday ride, .....Spoons, for limiting his destruction of the immediate environment to a chair and several dozen glasses.....Pottsie, for telling jokes and just being Pottsie, .......Buktu, for providing feast after feast seemingly effortlessly......and , of course, Bothways, for doing everything else!

If you feel that you have contributed to the weekend and have not been adequately recognised, you can call the TVPB whingers actionline on OMYGOD346510947856109456094865. calls will cost more than you can afford!
Want new brake pads?

Several of us needed to replace brake pads this weekend after the ride in muddy Exmoor red sandstone. Might be worth looking at www.superstarcomponents.com, who supply brake pads (among other bike stuff) at very competitive prices. I ordered some pads on Sunday evening and they arrived on Tuesday morning. Haven't used them yet, but according to the website, the products are sourced from recognised suppliers of high quality pads, so I'm hoping I've got a bargain. If anyone has any comments about the products or service, email webmaster@tvpb.org.uk and I'll post the comments on the site.
Tuesday 2nd Feb 2010    Travel to Exford for Bobbiball's weekend    You can see the YHA website for the Exford hostel at http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/south-west-england/hostels/exford/index.aspx. There are maps, descriptions, postcodes, photos and all manner of directions and instructions to get there......Check it out....No excuses now....
Tues 27th Jan 2010    Awards Lunch nearly sold out....Act Now!    Abbrook Caterer can only serve Roast Lunch for 55. We have already sold 47 tickets so if you want to eat, then get your arse in gear Pronto and send Pottsie your voting form and the money. WE ALSO need those trophies that are awarded annually back as soon as possible please.
Mon 26th Jan 2010    A Thankyou Message from Pottsie    A big thankyou to all those Bashers who turned out on Sunday. Brilliant large gathering. Thanks to Blowtorch for running the off road for me. Sturmey Archer also enjoyed it!! (the pub - not the off-road!! Ed) Just sorry that it was all so hectic that I couldn't speak to everyone.

Friday 22nd Jan 2010    Second Chance to do some tandem riding    Phil Jenkins emailed us at the end of last year asking if anyone would be up for being the pilot for his tandem. (He doesn't see well enough to pilot it himself.) He hasn't had any response so far, but is still keen to go pedalling.....so.....if anyone (Teignmouth area would be good) would like to contact Phil and help him give his tandem some exercise, I'm sure he would be very pleased. Call him on 01626 779877.
Fri 15th Jan 2010    Pottsie's Birthday Bash Sunday 24th Jan    This will take place at the LEY ARMS KENN . A Message from Snakey and Dusty re. Easter 2010

Hi Everyone!!!
We are up for sorting out an Easter biking trip to Scotland if you all want it?!
There's all the stuff we've done before and also we hear that Ae has a great red run now (as well as the downhill) and there is also a great private centre at Drumlanrig Castle nearby, so plenty to choose from.
For now, all we need to know is if you're up 4 it and if you're OK with last year's campsite, then we'll fill in the details to suit...

Thurs 14th Jan 2010    Update from Bothways re. Sunday's (17th Jan) ride from Exmouth    Hi all, due to the continuing unsettled weather conditions I will do the sunday ride from the Holly Tree as planned with food at the pub instead of my place, at 14:30. There will be an off road ride lead by blow torch and the road ride lead by myself or bin bag bob. Look forward to seeing as many bashers that brave the elements to make it to Exmouth
Sat 9th Jan 2010    The 2009 Awards Ceremony. A Message from our Leader.    This year we want to hold our OSCARS 2009 @the Abbrook Centre Kingsteignton. (opp the open air swimming pool). Next Sunday's ride (17th Jan). A message from Bothways.

Hi all. As you all know its my chilli and curry ride this coming sunday 17th January. If, like us, you havn't cycled yet this year due to the weather, you might not want to try to get over to Exmouth. So, if the weather miraculously gets better and the snow goes, I will do the chilli and curry from mine as normal. If not I'll get the Holly Tree to put us some chips on. Update on Wednesday 13th, so check out the website again nearer the time.
Thurs 7th Jan 2010    Upcoming "Mud and Sweat" event on Woodbury Common    The next event is being held at Woodbury Common, near Exeter on Sunday 31st January, with the following event taking place near Plymouth on the 28th March. Except that we had a call from Satanic today, who has been in hospital, having had a fall in Exeter at the end of November. He did some damage to his back, but has had an operation and is now home, and up and about with the aid of crutches. He's hoping to make the Bash awards at the end of January though.
